Do This If You Want to Build Your Confidence - Episode 7
Have you ever said to yourself, “I wish I had more confidence”? Or, “I’d do ___ if only I had more confidence”?
Part of gaining confidence is actually doing the thing you’re lacking confidence in, over and over again. It can be that simple. Practice something over and over again and boom, you will have more confidence. End of episode.
Facing your fears is a big deal and you should definitely do those things. But what if you just can’t? Sometimes a fear is just too big. It seems insurmountable and you can’t quite make yourself face it where you are currently at.
In comes the confidence boost!
What if you could build your confidence in other areas of your life and that would, in turn, help you build confidence in the area that you need the most help.
In order to do that, let’s first take a look at what confidence really is and where it comes from.
Yes, it comes from doing something in repetition and from a place of experience. But what about the people that are just naturally confident? They have no experience but confidently step up to the plate to give it a shot. They don’t care if they fail because they have confidence in themselves to figure it out.
Why do some people have confidence and others just don’t?
Your level of confidence is directly related to the level of connection you have to your core self.
Do you know who you are? Do you know what you stand for? Do you know where your passions lie? Do you know your strengths and weaknesses?
Discovering who you really are can help you build your confidence enough to help you take that uncomfortable step you’ve been avoiding. So, how do you find yourself?
You can certainly answer a bunch of self-discovery questions, but I’ve learned over the years that studying something isn’t the same as ingraining it into your soul. Action is what is required.
If you want to build your confidence, try learning something new. Think of something you have always wanted to try and take action on it. Learning a new skill that actually interests you won’t seem quite as scary. You’ll take the next steps. You’ll learn something new. And you’ll learn that you are capable to accomplishing success in new activities.
What did you like to do as a child that you have fallen away from? What is an activity that you always wanted to try but just never got around to doing?
One of the best activities you can do to build more confidence in every area of your life is learning martial arts. The combination of strength and control is a valuable lesson you can apply anywhere.
Is there a musical instrument you’ve always wanted to play? Maybe you love crafting but never made time to dive fully into it. Is there somewhere you’ve always wanted to travel to? Maybe learning a new language so you can travel there with confidence is what you’ve been needing.
The idea is to take action. Don’t just sit and think about doing it. Take some time right now to do some research on your next steps. What do you need to do to get started? Give yourself a deadline on when you are going to start. How much time are you going to commit to learning this new skill each week?
I sometimes think of these kinds of activities as frivolous and stop myself from pursuing them. But here’s the thing, how much do you want your life to change? Is doing what you’re currently doing working for you? If not, then maybe it’s time to try something new.
In Closing
Building your confidence is more than just facing your fear and working from a place of experience and repetition. It is about knowing who you are and trusting in your abilities. But studying your likes and dislikes, your values and ideals isn’t enough to get you there. It requires action.
Learning a new skill is the most valuable way you can build your confidence in every area of your life. Finding something that you want to learn and then taking action on it will help you discover more of yourself and have fun in the process. And you’ll find that, in the midst of it all, you will have more confidence to take action on even more new things.
