5 Health Benefits of Positive Thinking – Episode 10
The power of positive thinking goes further than a healthy mindset or beating back depression. There are some real health benefits linked to positivity.
So, what are they? Let’s get to it!
Lower Risk of Heart Disease
Research shows that positive thinking is linked to lower blood pressure. In fact, thinking more positively in stressful situations can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 38%. And a study published in The American Journal of Cardiology found that optimistic participants had higher levels of good (HDL) cholesterol and lower levels of triglycerides.
Lower Levels of Stress Hormones
Positive thinking activates the reward pathway in the brain. Continued activation of this part of the brain is actually linked to lower levels of stress hormones. And the ability to find positives in stressful situations, makes you less likely to release these ‘fight-or-flight’ hormones to begin with.
Improved Immune Function
Studies show that positivity is linked to a quicker recovery from physical illnesses, but also to greater resistance against them. So, not only do positive thinkers get sick less often, but they get better faster when they do come down with an illness.
In fact, one study looked at how optimistic healthy first-year law students felt about the school year ahead. They found that the more confident students had more and better functioning immune cells by the middle of the first semester than their less confident counterparts.

In other words, when a group of people were asked to reflect on their values prior to receiving advice on a sedentary lifestyle, they were more likely to act on that message and increase their activity levels. Whereas, those that did not reflect were more likely to become defensive and come up with excuses as to why the advice did not apply to them.
