3 Ways to Stop Going Through the Motions and Get Unstuck in Life
Have you ever felt stuck in life, like all you're doing is going through the motions and not really living?
I have definitely felt that way and it seriously bugged me. What the heck was I doing with my life?! I certainly wasn't enjoying it. Sure, maybe moments, but overall, something felt like it was missing.
In this episode, we'll discuss the three essential things you need to do to stop going through the motions and find a life you enjoy.
Let's dive in!
3 Ways to Stop Going Through the Motions and Get Unstuck in Life - Episode 6
Up until probably three years ago, I was just going through the motions of life. Looking back, I can definitely say that there was always this subtle discomfort, like I wasn't really happy, I wasn't really living, but it was insignificant enough to ignore.
Fortunately, my entire life was thrown in an agitator and I was forced to take a good, hard look at it all.
That's the interesting part of life. If you ignore something long enough, you will be forced to face it eventually. So, let's not ignore those little naggings anymore!
1. Get Uncomfortable
The comfort zone is one of the most dangerous places you can be. It makes you complacent. You stop growing and improving. You stop learning new things. And it is exactly the point where you just start going through the motions.
Uncomfortable, however, is a difficult choice to make. It’s scary. It’s unknown and unpredictable. You have to step outside of the little box that you've built and potentially FAIL.
Changing the trajectory of your life is about making different decisions and choosing to rock the boat a little bit in order to get a different result.
But what if you’ve been making tons of changes already and you’re still sitting there stuck? There is a big difference between making changes and getting uncomfortable. Did the changes you made come about because you were no longer comfortable where you were at? Did you make a safe choice?
Getting uncomfortable means being scared to do it but doing it anyway. It means taking a little bit of risk.
When I truly realized that I was just going through the motions in my life and finally understood that I had to start doing things I was afraid to do in order to really make the changes I wanted to see, I took a huge leap and jumped into a business I was terrified to do. I told myself that I didn’t have to do it forever if I really hated it, but that I had to get passed the fear that was holding me back.
It turned out to be the absolute right move for me and it helped me to continue to step up and show up for myself and others.
If you had absolutely no fear, what is something that you would get started on immediately to better your life?
It won’t be easy, but imagine the person you will be on the other side of that decision. You will find a more confident person with incredible self-worth if you choose it!

2. Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is THE go-to strategy for anything that you want to improve in your life.
Want to find the love of your life? Have gratitude for all of the people you dated before that taught you so many lessons about what you do and don’t want in a partner.
Want more money to come into your pocket? Have gratitude for the money you already have and all the things you are able to buy or pay for because of it.
Want to stop going through the motions and feel truly happy with your life? Have gratitude for where you currently are in life, for the recognition and awareness that you know you need to do something different.
When you practice gratitude on a regular basis, you raise your vibration and call better people and opportunities into your life. The amazing thing is, you don’t even have to know what you want or what you’re looking for! The right things, in the right vibration, will find you.
So, next time you are feeling sorry for yourself or you are repeating the story of being stuck, STOP! And start saying some things that you are grateful for.
Whatever you are grateful for, whatever you appreciate about this life that you are currently experiencing, FEEL the gratitude. Feel the warmth of it fill you up. Feel your heart expand in that appreciation.
Gratitude will take you anywhere you want to go if you practice it regularly.
3. Set Goals
It took me a long time to understand the importance of goals. I vaguely had them as I was going through school or finding a job, but once I was in a decent place, I just started coasting aimlessly along.
Earl Nightingale describes the difference between people with and without goals. The moment I finally grasped it, everything changed.
He says that a person without goals is like a ship with no captain or crew. If there is nothing to guide the ship toward its destination, then it is just aimlessly floating along until it wrecks or sinks.
Conversely, a person with goals is like a ship with the captain and crew and 99% of the time will get to where it’s going.
If you don’t have goals, of course you’re just going through the motions! You have no path. You have no guidance system. You are just reacting to things as they come along and it is taking you on a wild ride in every direction.
The real difference between people that have a straight path to their career and happiness and those that circle around and go every which direction is goals.
Setting, planning for, and working on your goals will make all the difference in how your life is moving. Are you taking it somewhere or are you just letting life happen to you?
What do you truly want to see in your life? If you don’t know exactly what you want, start with how you want to feel. Come up with some action steps you can start working on today to get you unstuck and moving again.
In Closing
If you feel stuck in life and want to stop going through the motions, you have to get uncomfortable. You have to choose to do things that scare you and make you grow as a person.
When you practice gratitude regularly, you fuel the drive within you and you attract better circumstances and opportunities.
And when you have goals, you have something to work toward, a path to follow. Goals help you take those scary steps because you are working for something.
