The One Thing Keeping You Stuck

Do you know the one thing that will propel you from the average everyday to extraordinary? Do you know why you remain stuck and stalled at a particular level? Do you know what is the thing that is holding you back from achieving your dreams?

That one thing is your belief.

The level of your achievement correlates to the level of belief you have in yourself. We all have a certain container of belief. Once we reach the ceiling of that container, that’s it. You stay stuck at that level.

If you don’t think you’re smart enough for that next level promotion, guess what, you are going to sabotage yourself to prove you are right.

But what if you were able to remove the lid on your belief? If you could change how you think about yourself so that you can become anyone you want?

Do you believe you are capable of creating the life of your dreams? Do you believe you are capable of creating success in your dream career?

If you are anything like me, there is work you could do in the arena of belief.

So, how do you crack open your lid and expand your belief?

Identify Your Limiting Belief Story

The story you’ve been telling yourself your whole life is what puts you on a certain page and keeps you stuck there. In order to grow and move, you need to work on changing your story.

The real key to this, though, is that you have to first identify what your story is. Some stories are easy to pinpoint. “I’m an introvert.” This is a story I tell myself. I BELIEVE it’s true.

For me, the story that I’m an introvert holds me back because it can easily become an excuse for me not to step up and do the hard things like connecting with people.

But all in all, it’s just a story that I’ve bought into. There is plenty of evidence of introverts coaching and speaking on massive stages and singing in front of large crowds.

A story that allows you to make excuses is not serving you and this is a story you should work on changing.

Now let’s say you have a “hidden” story – one that’s not so obvious. How can you dig it out? Because, remember, identifying a story is the first and most important step to changing it.

Sometimes, just recognizing a story is enough to squash it in its tracks.

I recently have been struggling to get back into action in my business. I have a long history of starting and stopping and I was trying to figure out, why do I do this? It is extremely frustrating because I want big things for my life, but I constantly sabotage my progress.

So, I sat down to journal about it, because I find that writing out my thoughts often solves a lot of my problems. I’m sitting there writing about what is my problem and all the things and I asked, why am I not doing the things I say I’m going to do? And an answer popped into my head – because I’m afraid of success.

What! That can’t be right, why would I be afraid of success? And I just kept writing these things and I wrote, because if you’re successful you won’t blend in.

Boom!

I have an underlying belief that I need to try my very best to blend in with the crowd. To me, this makes perfect sense. I remember how I HATED my bright orange hair when I was little because no one else had hair like mine and I stuck out like a sore thumb.

Even though blending in is no longer what I want for myself, the version of me that has been living all these years is still following along with those old guidelines, unbeknownst to me!

So, I’ve identified a belief that I have:

First by acknowledging a negative action that I am taking and that I want to change
And then asking why I do that

It is important to write these things out because it cements them down while also pulling them out.

Once you’ve identified the belief, now it’s time to change the story.

Change Your Limiting Belief Story

Clearly the story you’ve been telling yourself doesn’t make you feel very good if it’s producing actions that you want to change. So, ask yourself, how do you want to feel? What story do you want to tell yourself instead?

Now write that down. Rewrite the story so that it serves you.

We can go back to my story about not wanting to standout. I can rewrite that by stating:

I love the things about myself that make me different. When I am fully myself and stand out, I give others permission to be who they are as well and that feels amazing. When I embrace my differences and stand out from the crowd, I am standing proudly as the person God created me to be.

That story pumps me up! It makes me elated and excited to be me. That’s what you are looking for.

You want to replace your story with something that FEEDS you, not stops you cold.

As I said, many times just identifying your story and knowing your new story is enough to completely set you free. But sometimes it still takes work. So, when you find yourself taking that same low-level action, go back to your new story and rewrite it until you feel it in your entire being again.

Changing your beliefs is not for the faint of heart. It takes real work and real courage to do the digging and poke the bear. But, holy moly, what’s waiting on the other side is so worth it!

In Closing

The one thing that will get you unstuck in your life and moving toward your dreams is building belief in yourself.

In order to expand your belief, you must:

Identify the story you tell yourself that has been holding you back, and…
Change that story to one that serves you

When you have done that, repeat your new story until you become unstoppable!
